Most quail are better kept in aviaries with a minimum size of 4 foot x 3 foot of floor space. The smaller species can be kept in cages, although aviaries tend to be better for the birds. This keeps them fitter, giving them more to do - scratching and searching around the floor etc looking for food to eat, i.e. insects etc.

If you keep the smaller species of quail in cages, always remember, when frightened, quail fly straight up damaging their heads so thought should be given to this before keeping quail in cages. There is no general size of cage for any given bird. Common sense should prevail. The bird should be able to move around freely without bumping into other birds and have food and water easily available without having to compete with other birds for it.
